According to Otaku Times, ANN, and DarkMirage, the research agency Media Create released their annual research on the “Otaku Industry”. The total number of sales amount to about 186.6 billion yen, which translate into about 1.65 billion USD, which is a 2% increase over last year.
The breakdown is as follows:
DVD/CD (Anime): 18.2%Published Material (Novels/Manga): 21.8%
Games: 30.0%
Figures and Merchandise: 15.1%
Doujinshi: 14.9%
According to DarkMirage, the report also includes a conclusion on an increase of “light otaku”, who enjoys anime and games more casually. The increase is (apparently) due to the Internet, because of ease of access and communications between individuals of similar interest.
