Code Geass R2 : a Sunrise exemplar

Yes! It’s over!

…And it’s an absolutely bullshit ending that still manages to tie up most of the loose ends, mainly via lottery and random string knotting (“let’s see, Jeremiah… and Anya… hmmm…”). But what the hell, right? It’s a ridiculous end to a ridiculous series, so let’s just savour it.

Perhaps to make up for the last thirty-five-odd episodes, there’s philosophy (read: sophistry) coming out the wazoo. Kallen and Suzaku continue their “change from inside vs. change from outside” debate, but unfortunately, the actual fight scene was awesome so all that will fall on deaf ears. Nunnally instantly becomes the stupidest character in the series (but still better than off-the-charts Tamaki) and Lelouch just does his magic on her anyway, so it balances out.

(I have to say, though, Lelouch’s resolve at this point is pretty admirable.)

Anyway, Lelouch pins all the world’s hatred on himself, then kills himself with “Zero”, thus giving the world a future by marking himself down as its enemy. Surprisingly good move by Sunrise. Except for the fifty-car-pileup in front of it.

This goes back to that ‘disappointment’ thing I was saying for Macross Frontier. Season 1 of Geass didn’t start out too bad. And apparently, Sunrise did a reasonably good plotline and themes to show. But the execution is terrible enough that just laughing is not enough to cover the letdown. The overall framework for Geass could have led to a strong story, but… well, yeah.

And thus I present, the only reasons I kept watching:

Kallen would be here too, if she had any role beyond “sidelined abandoned love interest”. Actually, I’m not sure what Anya’s got over her aside from loli appeal. Shrug.

Code Geass 00

Sunrise’s magnificent unification of Code Geass and Gundam 00.

Code Geass R2 : THE POWER OF LOVE

Not that I regularly talk about Geass to begin with, but I think I have run out of things to say about Sunrise’s monstrosity. It’s okay to make a snarky comment or two once in a while, but not being a marathon runner in terms of making funny quips, R2 is just too hard on my sanity. I’ve stopped bothering to make sense of it a few episodes back, but now I can’t even try and write about it. See, I’ve spent a paragraph describing why I can’t write about it.

Congratulations, Sunrise. I usually just accept things and shrug when still following a series, but Code Geass R2 is the first anime ever to fully break my weirdness censor mid-season, beating both Evangelion and Lain.

Code Geass R2 : ZEROES!

Oh god i lold.

Code Geass R2 : Quality Entertainment

Thanks to Sunrise’s “hoes before bros” strategy, Code Geass R2 is losing the intrigue of its predecessor – well, what little it had left by the time the cliffhanger ending came – but gaining back its entertainment value. It’s just fun to watch now, generally without the “they did not just do that” facepalm/train wreck factor of unintentional hilarity of being so bad it’s good.

Code Geass R2 : strategic camera placement

I like how Sunrise has given up on plot logic and decided to just give the audience a great time. If anything, they are leaning on the characters that they’ve wasted a season to cultivate to carry the show to its pointless end. One of Gundam 00’s many mistakes was to kill off its cast in the last three episodes, but at least it gives them a chance to start from a fresh plate.
